Is Top Gun Really a Gay Movie?
70Intro
Top Gun is one of my favorite movies of all time. In fact, I even mention Top Gun in my other hub on Movies for Cool People. Top Gun had great influence over my life - I joined the military a long time ago because of Top Gun! My life wouldn't be the same without the movie.
As a cool person, I find it unlikely that I may have missed the fact that Top Gun is really a gay movie; however, new evidence has been brought to my attention. And, upon reflection, I now wonder if Top Gun really is a gay movie.
Just so you know, I have no issue with gay movies or homosexuality. I just don't like that after all these years of thinking Top Gun was a macho straight movie, it was actually a cleverly crafted gay film designed to, perhaps, help gay men come out of the closet. This makes me feel a little strange....like someone pulled one over on me and I wasn't clever enough to catch it!
Clues that Top Gun is a Gay Movie
- The locker room scene with everyone hanging out in towels...what value did this really add to the movie?
- The volleyball scene with everyone sweaty and hugging on each other. Again, what value did this add to the movie?
- Kelly McGillis - sure, I used to have a crush on her and think she was hot, but the reality is that she never really was that hot. Why didn't they find a hotter girl to play that role?
Slider: Goose, whose butt did you kiss to get in here anyway?
Goose: The list is long, but distinguished.
Slider: Yeah, well so is my Johnson.
- The Kenny Loggins song "Playing with the Boys"....
- The scene where Maverick is hanging out shaving in his underwear after Goose died. He could have had at least pants on, right?
- The Navy....it's commonly known that the Navy has the most gay men of any service.
- The constant innuendos about "butts" and "johnsons"

Quentin Tarantino's Take on Top Gun

Interesting view on Top Gun. I never thought of it being gay.
I still haven't seen it and therefore can't comment. I am sorry, even if it is I can't undertand the hipe about being gay - no I am not -. To me, they are just another group of people.
Haven't seen the movie, but my idea is that if someone wants to think it's a gay movie, he'll find proof, but that won't mean he's right. At the same time, if the gay community claims this movie, so what? The whole issue gets boring after a while.
I'm gay and personally don't care for the movie. Mostly because I was subjected to hundreds of viewings by my roomate and fraternity brother. Even though he loved it, I honestly felt it wasn't any better than Titanic, just another formulaic blockbuster type film.
Gay is cool....
Ok, here's what really pisses me off: why is it that whenever men are the ones who are sexualized in media, people automatically assume it's directed at gay MEN instead of straight WOMEN? And whenever women are the ones sexualized, it's ALSO targeted for men as well?
Does society really think that women have no sexuality, and that men are the only ones who can have sexual desires? I hate how this sexist assumption is so fckin pervasive that people don't even question it.
Ok I went searching for top gun and gay cos I just watched the movie and suddenly saw all the gayness! Just like you, i've seen this movie a hundred times since I was a kid and always thought it was just a bunch of macho dudes. For the first time tonight, i thought to myself - wth is with all the gay guys? LOL
As a former Reagan/Bush era navy pilot, I'm certain that the homo erotic elements of Top Gun were intentional on the part of the makers of the film. Ask any navy pilot where the communal shower and locker room is for his squadron's spaces on a naval air station, and he'll tell you there are none (at least none that I'd ever seen in squadron spaces on a naval air station). Even if there is the odd squadron space on a NAS that has communal officer showers, does anyone really think it's standard practice for navy pilots to shower together after a mission, like high school gym class?
Yeah, well, I just saw it for the first time, and while there's nothing wrong with it, there was definitely some gay themes worked into it. I honestly don't understand how anyone could not see it. The initial scene where Maverick meets Iceman, just the way it was shot, it really hinted at a gay subtext, but then the volleyball scene was a dead give away. I didnt think it was that good a movie though. The whole movie was just kind of "wtf am I watching?"
Let us not forget the bar scene
Goose: "the bet is twenty dollars."
Maverick:"twenty dollars"
Goose:"you've got to have carnal knowledge, of a lady this time and it's got to be on the premises."
Of a lady this time, what was it last time,
Gay
Anybody can find something gay in every movie.
I can find something gay every movie the famous star is in haha.

This is really an interesting hub. It really amused me! I had my laugh especially watching the Quentin Tarantino´s take on Top Gun. It was FUNNY rather than true... All the arguments you rendered are very ambiguous so I am not convinced about the whole gay thing. It´s a great movie, that´s all...I had my laugh ha ha :-) Great hub!
